“A picture of how windy it has gotten here in Balmorhea, Texas (normally you would see the mountains). It was never this bad even last year running across the U.S.
Here is the latest update. Sarah and Larry who reported on my story are coming to pick me up. I am going to go backwards to Junction, Texas and backwards again to Kerrville, Texas in the morning. At this time I am going officially call this journey failed and rent a vehicle.
I am going to follow interstate 10 to 8 to San Diego, California and then up the coast line to Santa Monica, California and drop the bike off at Triathlon LAB who has done so much to get me this far. From there, depending on how many people I have not had a chance to meet I will head up to Portland, Oregon or as far as there is someone who has been waiting for me.
Between now and then I am going to do a lot of wallowing because I am already sick to my stomach that I’m ending this, but I have found it impossible to drive my knees forward and will regret this decision for the rest of my life. The idea of doing it on foot, logistically at this point would be impossible for me.
I have no idea how many of you I would have not had a chance to bike with or meet, but if you are on this route still, I hope you will take the time to tell me where you are at between here and the California line up to Oregon. I will then head home in the next week to my wife who has been so patient, understanding, devoted and loving for so long with all of the ups and downs. I will be sharing my last thoughts of the journey on a video here in a few moments with all of you.”
